It has been a year in the making, and now the Downtown Sylvania Association is ready to launch the first phase of the Parklet Project. One of the goals of the DORA that was launched in May 2019 was to create more gathering spaces for people to enjoy food and beverages outside. With countless successful programs worldwide, parklets have proven their ability to not only create greener, healthier communities, but also increase neighborhood character and sense of identity through creative and inspired design that brings people together.

Working with the city of Sylvania to determine a safety plan and location, DSA started a year-long process to bring this project to Main Street. Signature Decks brought their vision to life – creating two Parklets using composite decking, mixed metals and urban fencing that features complementary layouts of benches, planters and standing bars. The Parklets have been made possible by sponsors: Lourdes University, Metamora State Bank, Signature Decks and Jaws “Just Add Water System.”
The Parklets will provide an inviting ambiance to the street-scape and elevate the downtown infrastructure by expanding patio space in two parking spots on Main Street. The parklets will be public and open to all, not just DORA drinkers.
The Parklets will be installed on June 7 starting at 5 pm. The builder will finalize the ramp to bridge the Parklet to the sidewalk on-site so they will be accessible to the public about one week later.
“The Red Bird Arts District recognizes the many creative elements that exist within Sylvania’s downtown business district such as exhibition spaces, live music, culinary arts, studios, design firms and boutiques that all celebrate the arts. By fostering this creative culture in downtown Sylvania and building the community through art-related events, we will continue to lead and grow as a destination for the arts, dining and entertainment,” notes Rae Navarre, Main Street manager of Red Bird Arts District Downtown Sylvania Association.
