Sylvania Schools welcomes students to the 2020-2021 school year starting Monday, Aug. 31. Students met with teachers in person and remotely Aug. 25-28.
This opportunity allowed the students to get a sense of familiarity and comfort with the new classroom setting and learn expectations before school begins.
New this year is the use of Schoology, a learning management system, to enhance the remote capabilities for learning and engaging our students in grades K-12. Prior to the first official day for teachers on Aug. 14, 50 teachers became Schoology trainers for their colleagues to expedite the learning curve and get the groundwork ready for the year. The teachers will also provide building-level support throughout the course of the school year.
As the first day of school quickly approaches, the district is looking forward to bringing back students into the classrooms as soon and as safely possible. On Aug. 24, the Board of Education approved the plan for the district to move all grade levels to hybrid learning starting Sept. 14 through the end of the first quarter, Oct. 22. The COVID-19 case trend in our area will be monitored for further decisions about when it may be necessary to switch between the learning models. Students who enrolled in the Sylvania Alternative Learning Academy will continue with 100 percent online learning with Sylvania teacher support for at least the first semester.
The district is working to make the school year as normal as possible given the protocols and guidelines that are in place. I am grateful for the parents and teachers who have been called upon to be more flexible than ever as we begin a second school year with COVID-19.
I appreciate our families and teachers as we work to address our reopening of school. As we look ahead to what school will look like for our students there is a lot to be proud of, despite the circumstances brought upon by the pandemic. I’ve had the opportunity to visit each of our buildings and I can attest, teachers and students alike are excited about starting the school year.
