The 2019 Janet Phleger Foundation grant recipients are shown with gifts that were handmade by past recipients to welcome them into the JPF family.
The Janet Phleger Foundation (JPF) was established in 2007 by Jennifer Brouwer in honor of her mother who passed away of pancreatic cancer in 2001. Brouwer was only 19 years old at the time. While caring for her mother, Brouwer learned first hand that money saved for higher education can quickly be depleted to help pay for costly cancer treatments and hospital stays. Often a family’s funds are drained through a health crisis and, many times the hope attending college are no longer feasible. Since 2007, the JPF has awarded $140,000 and helped 50 students achieve their colligate dreams.
JPF provides college and trade school scholarships for students that have a parent/legal guardian diagnosed with cancer. The parent or legal guardian could have beaten cancer years ago, are currently fighting the disease, or lost their battle to cancer. The scholarship is currently $3,000 and is available to students in the Greater Toledo Area.
