He has a five-star kicking rating from Kohl’s Kicking, is ranked #36 among kickers nationally, and more. With that and his confidence from practices, he has high hopes for the future. From couch to ‘Iron Mom’

Amanda Ballard is proud to be an “Iron Mom.” The mother of three earned the title by swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and running 26.2 miles in an Ironman event held in Des Moines, Iowa on June 12.

“I didn’t start running until 2021,” stated Ballard. “I didn’t run in high school or college. I did the “Couch to 5K” program. I started doing 5Ks and eventually did a half marathon. My friends encouraged me to consider triathlon racing. I purchased a road bike and learned how to swim. My first triathlon was in 2018. My first Half Ironman was to be in 2020 and I ended up doing a virtual race on my own with my friends after it was canceled in 2020. A stellar field competes in the Dana LPGA Open

The Dana Open presented by Marathon will feature 15 of the top 20 players on the 2022 LPGA money list who have committed to play in the upcoming tournament, Sept. 1-4, at Highland Meadows Golf Club.

“The field for this year’s tournament is fantastic,” stated tournament director Judd Silverman. “We have all five major championship winners in our field this year. Southview alumna benefits from motorsports internship

Kenna Edwards, a Sylvania Southview High School alumna, recently completed the Women in Motorsports internship at Chip Ganassi Racing, powered by PNC Bank. The program, which seeks to spark dialogue about the importance of equality and inclusion for women in motorsports, gave Edwards valuable hands-on training and inspiration for what’s next in her career. Lourdes esports coordinator named

Lourdes University Vice President of Athletics Janet Eaton-Smith announced that Harrison Greer has been named the Gray Wolves’ new esports coordinator.

Greer had been the program’s graduate assistant and also served as a student coach and player for the Gray Wolves during his undergraduate playing days.

“It is an exciting time in athletics to name an alum, Harrison Greer, as the next esports coordinator,” Eaton-Smith stated. “Not only does it help support the alumni relations, but it also brings a fresh prospective as well as respect for the University as a whole. It will help support the big picture in the athletics department. Northview alumnus reaches NFL

Luke Fortner was recently drafted to play center for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Fortner, a Sylvania Northview alumni, graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in mechanical engineering. In addition to having numerous awards as a result of his football and academic performances, Fortner has gained a valuable perspective because of his experiences throughout the progression of his career. Local weightlifter wins bronze in national competition

Sylvania area resident, St. Francis de Sales graduate and Northern Michigan University student, Will Heller, is sporting three bronze medals he won at the USA National Powerlifting Championships in Las Vegas on June 30. His record in competition includes a 284-pound snatch and a 360-pound clean-and-jerk. The snatch is one fluid motion from floor to lock-out above the head. The clean-and-jerk; however, is done in two motions, the first from floor to front rack, over the shoulders and then to lock-out above the head. Northview golfer competes in AJGA Dana Junior Open

Northview junior Ben Graeth is one of the 78 boys and girls to step up to the tee in the 2022 AJGA Dana Incorporated Junior Open that begins on July 19 through July 21 at Sylvania Country Club.

Graeth began playing with family members at the age of 2 at several local golf courses including Highland Meadows Golf Club, the family’s home course. The Northview Wildcats baseball team, led by head coach Greg Szparka, won the state championship for the first time in school history.
