Logo design winner honored; Scavenger hunt gets underway

Sylvania City Councilman Marcus Hansen presents Highland fifth grade student Audrey Muehlfeld with a framed copy of her award-winning Sylvania America 250 logo design.

Sylvania City Councilman Marcus Hansen presented Highland Elementary fifth-grade student Audrey Muehlfeld with a framed rendition of her award-winning logo design for the Sylvania: America 250 celebration on Feb. 20.

Sponsored by Sylvania Arts, the award recognizes Audrey’s winning design, which will appear throughout the year on promotional materials and at events commemorating the nation’s founding, offering a youthful stamp on a milestone 250 years in the making. Hansen serves as the city’s representative on the Sylvania Arts board.

No stranger to artistic achievement, Audrey — a student of Dani Fuller at Fuller Art House — has previously earned first-place honors for her work through the Monroe County 4-H Club.

Her winning logo made its public debut with the launch of the Sylvania America 250 Scavenger Hunt, the first in a series of community events planned as part of Sylvania’s celebration of the nation’s semiquincentennial.

Now underway, the community wide adventure is made possible through Gayleen Gindy’s collection of 250 photographs featuring iconic Sylvania-area landscapes. Each month, participants will be invited to identify 25 featured landmarks and answer accompanying questions using images posted online at heritagesylvania.org/sylvania250.

Those entering will have the entire month to explore Sylvania and Sylvania Township in search of each location. While some sites may be instantly recognizable, others may call for a bit of detective work. Most photographed landmarks are located within the city of Sylvania or Sylvania Township, with a few noted exceptions.

Entries must be submitted by 11:59 pm on the final day of each month. All 25 questions must be answered to complete an entry, and participants are encouraged to make their best guesses if unsure. Answers should be as specific and detailed as possible.

The first participant to submit a 100 percent correct entry for March will receive a $25 Amazon gift card sponsored by F&M Bank. Additional prizes will be announced in the coming months, and all entries — whether fully correct or not — will be included in a grand prize drawing at the conclusion of the Sylvania Scavenger Search in December.

Adventure, history, and hometown pride come together in this search that invites residents of all ages to look closer, wander farther, and discover the stories behind familiar places — one photo at a time.
