Northview and The University of Toledo graduate, Jamal Shaheen, is following in his entrepreneurial father, Nabil Sheehan’s, footsteps. In February, he purchased the former One Hour Cleaners, 5811 Monroe St. in Country Square Plaza.
“I had graduated from UT with a degree in sales and marketing last spring and I knew I wanted to have a business of my own,” he stated. “I had grown up working for my dad’s company, Sign Dezign USA, so I am familiar with the challenges and the benefits of small business ownership.”
“My dad suggested this would be a good business for me,” Shaheen said. “He had been a long time customer of the former dry cleaning business before the owner closed last November after 25 years of doing business in this location.”
With the new ownership came the new name, Sylvania Dry Cleaners. “I love Sylvania and have incorporated the city of trees into my logo,” he reported.
While the name is new, the emphasis on service to customers remains the same, according to Shaheen. “I am very fortunate to have five experienced employees, including Maria Banda who has worked here for the past 21 years, join my team. They are helping me to learn all about the processes we use. This experienced staff has been vital to me,” he said.
Laundry services including washing, folding or hanging, pressing, along with dry cleaning are processed on site. Items to be laundered or dry cleaned can include clothing, work wear such as uniforms and scrubs, along with household items such as tablecloths, napkins, and bedding. Formal and wedding dress cleaning and wedding dress preservation services are standard menu items. Suede and leather cleaning along with alteration services are also available.
“Sanitizing clothing, work wear and household items is part of the dry cleaning process, which is even more important because of the recent pandemic,” Shaheen offered. “And, best of all, we use an organic dry cleaning solution, which is environmentally friendly and does not leave a pesty chemical odor on clothing, yet it is effective in removing stains.”
Sylvania Dry Cleaners is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm. They plan to add Saturday hours in July.
