THE SUPERINTENDENT SPEAKS
by Dr. Veronica Motley
Just as with each and every August, so many families are happily anticipating the start of a new school year and this year is no exception. With school supplies lining the store aisles along with a variety of school clothes on display, we recognize that the 2021-2022 school year is just around the corner and Sylvania Schools is excited to welcome our students and their families back to a great new year.
In a district the size of Sylvania, with over 1,000 employees and 7,800 children, educating students during a community health crisis was quite an undertaking. I can’t say enough about our incredible staff who educated and supported our students throughout 2020 and into 2021. And, it is this same dedicated, and exceptional staff that will warmly welcome our students back to school this fall.
Like many organizations during the pandemic, Sylvania Schools finds that we are able to move forward with some positive and innovative practices which evolved from such a challenging time. These initiatives include SALA, our 100 percent remote learning option instructed by Sylvania teachers, Schoology, a Learning Management System (LMS) that augments our traditional learning environment, and virtual meetings as a flexible option for parents to meet with our Sylvania teachers.
We recognize that the pandemic still exists and, just as we have over the course of the past year and a half, we will continue to partner with the Toledo Lucas County Health Department, monitor data/conditions and ancillary legislation that will impact our decisions as we keep student and staff safety a priority.
As a number of our fall athletics have started summer conditioning, it is another sign that our annual school kickoffs will take place in a couple of weeks. Our traditional kickoff events are scheduled for the week of Aug. 9, followed by the start of school the following week.
I am proud to call Sylvania my home and am thrilled to be a part of the Sylvania Schools family. We have a fantastic staff, amazing students and an incredibly engaged and resilient community. We are sincerely thankful for your support of students, educators, staff and our district!
