Halloween

Some witches and perhaps a Spider-Man or two will be free to roam the streets of Sylvania Township Oct. 31 from 6 to 7:30 pm, according to action taken by Sylvania Township trustees. In addition to those trick-or-treaters wandering residential areas, there will also be an increased police presence in an effort to curb any reckless driving which might endanger costumed youngsters.

In recognition of current times, this year’s resolution setting the date and time for trick-or-treating adds the phrase, “Unless otherwise directed by the State of Ohio or Lucas County Health Department.”

Pizza

The Sylvania Township Police Department will hold a Pizza with Police event from 5 to 7 pm on Oct. 5 at Amie’s Pizza Factory, 6710 West Central Ave.

Officers will be present to answer questions about policing in general or specific issues informally while sharing a slice of pizza.

Cobblestone Woods

The Lucas County Plan Commission has recommended approval for a zoning change which would allow for development of a senior-living site in the Cobblestone Woods Business Park. The measure would change the zoning from its current special designation to a planned unit development.

The area being considered is 14.6 acres in the 7200 and 7300 blocks of Crossleigh Court in the business park. It is the same property which had been considered for use for a now defunct plan for a community recreation center.

The proposed development contains 12 buildings, three main buildings and nine villa-style buildings. The project would include independent-living, assisted living, and memory care.

Altogether the project developers envision 181 units.

Police

Sylvania Township trustees have approved the promotion of one police officer and the hiring of five new officers. Kevin Steinman has been promoted from patrol officer to sergeant.

According to Chief Paul Long, he has been a member of the department since 2009 and will take over as supervisor of the midnight shift.

The chief said the newly hired officers will be filling current and near future vacancies.
