Township briefs – February 6, 2023

Sylvania Township recently closed its books on the 2022 budget year. Fiscal Officer Dave Simko provided an overview of the financials during the Jan. 17 regular meeting.

At the end of December, the General Fund showed expenses of $1,899,338 or 89.2 percent of the annual budget. The Road Ramp Bridge Fund had expenses of $1,947,650 or 86.1 percent of the annual budget. Continue reading Township briefs – February 6, 2023

The City Beat – Accolades given to NV football punter as city gets back to business

Rob and Jennifer Kasee accompanied their son, Northview senior Alex Kasee, as he received a proclamation from Mayor Craig Stough and members of Sylvania City Council at the Jan. 3 meeting. Kasee, a kicker and punter on the Wildcat football team garnered First Team All-Northern Lakes League, All District, and All-State honors as a punter. He also earned Academic All-NLL honors with a 3.5 cumulative GPA. As a junior, he earned First Team All-NLL, All-District, and All-State honors, and as a sophomore, Second Team All-NLL, and All-District as well as Honorable Mention All-State honors as a kicker. The City Beat – SV soccer stars honored

Mayor Craig Stough began the agenda of the Dec. 5 meeting of Sylvania City Council by offering a proclamation declaring Dec. 5  as Tyler Pawlicki Day and Dec. 6 as Carys Bourbeau Day. The two Southview seniors were each named to OHSAA All-Ohio First Teams, All-District First Teams, and Northern Lakes League First Teams for boys and girls soccer, respectively. The city beat – Residents voice opinions; guests present agency and levy information

Dave Schmitt of DS Developers made a presentation of plans for the property at 4215 N. McCord Rd. between Regis Park and Victoria Court to begin the public hearing prior to Sylvania City Council’s Oct. 17 meeting. More than 20 Sylvania residents also attended the meeting. Several voiced opposition opinions while one couple spoke in favor of the project.  After reviewing all comments, Sylvania City Council President Mark Frye made the motion to refer the issue to the Zoning and Annexation Committee for further review and consideration, scheduled for 6:45 pm on Nov. 7. Mayor’s Message – Sylvania River Trail/Harroun Road crossing lights

The Sylvania River Trail/Harroun Road crossing light is now installed and should be energized by Toledo Edison and activated by the contractor soon.

The pedestrian crossing has been a safety concern since Phase 2 of the River Trail opened a few years ago. Harroun Road is often busy with traffic and is four lanes wide, so crossing can be hazardous. The new crossing light will improve pedestrian safety.

Although funded and approved more than a year ago, the construction has been delayed by pandemic-driven supply chain problems. The actual traffic lights were delivered earlier in the year, but the fabrication and delivery of the overhead poles took months longer than anticipated. Sylvania has a new police chief

“I love being in law enforcement! I loved being an officer on patrol and being able to meet and talk with people in the community! I loved being a sergeant and assuming more responsibilities! I loved being a captain and now I love being the chief! This has been my dream since I first began on this career path. That’s why I earned an administration degree,” said Sylvania Police’s newest top officer, Danilynn Miller. She was sworn into the office during the Sept. 6 Sylvania City Council meeting. Township Topics – October 3, 2022

Some witches and perhaps a Spider-Man or two will be free to roam the streets of Sylvania Township Oct. 31 from 6 to 7:30 pm, according to action taken by Sylvania Township trustees. In addition to those trick-or-treaters wandering residential areas, there will also be an increased police presence in an effort to curb any reckless driving which might endanger costumed youngsters.

In recognition of current times, this year’s resolution setting the date and time for trick-or-treating adds the phrase, “Unless otherwise directed by the State of Ohio or Lucas County Health Department.” Continue reading Township Topics – October 3, 2022
