At the regular June 5 Sylvania City Council meeting, Service Director, Kevin Aller, brought several issues up for approval. He requested that council approve an ordinance to accept the $24,000 proposal from DGL Consulting Engineers to prepare a Hybrid Beacon Safety study for Highland, Maplewood, and Sylvan elementary, and McCord Junior High schools, as the current crossing system is ineffective.
Aller also requested the approval of an ordinance to accept the $14,300 proposal of WE Realty Solutions and an ordinance to accept the $2,875 proposal of DGL Consulting to provide right-of-way acquisition services for the Monroe, Main, and Summit streets traffic signal improvement project to add more pedestrian-friendly signaling.
Aller’s final traffic signal request was for a contract modification for the Harroun Road/Ravine Drive signal. He asked council to approve an ordinance to amend the city’s agreement with DGL Consulting Engineers to redesign the road into the ProMedica Flower Hospital campus. According to Aller, there is an additional cost of $66,758 for the redesign but there will be substantial cost savings on the construction project because of the road redesign.
All four ordinances were approved.
Aller also received approval of his request to contribute $82,500 as the city’s share for replacing the Sylvania Senior Center’s HVAC system. The Township will share the cost.
Council then approved Aller’s request to offer two medium dump trucks and two pick-up trucks that are out-of-service for auction on GovDeals.com.
In other business, city council approved ordinances providing for the assessment of the costs of drainage ditch construction, maintenance, cleaning, and shade tree maintenance within public right-of-ways and street lighting on abutting property owners.
City Council President, Mark Frye, reported on the Sister Cities spring meeting held on June 4 in Port Huron, Mich. Plans are underway for the joint art show and the Woodstock Christmas parade.
Council member Mary Westphal noted that the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District has a strong enrollment for its programs this season and that Burnham Park construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of June.
The next Sylvania City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 20.
