Mayor Craig Stough proclaimed July 17 as Dottie Segur Day, honoring her for her 22 years of service to Sylvania Area Family Services. Segur is retiring effective Aug. 1. Several members of the SAFS Board of Trustees along with staff members and friends joined the Sylvania mayor and members of City Council to congratulate Segur for her service to the organization and to the community.
League of Women Voters volunteer Sue Runkle presented information regarding Issue 1, which will be on the ballot at the special election on Aug. 8. She emphasized the League’s mission to educate the voting public about the pros and cons of the issue and the importance of voting particularly in a special election.
Sylvania Service Director Kevin Aller presented an update to City Council on the Harroun and Ravine roads signal installation project right-of-way acquisitions at the July 17 meeting. His request to acquire a .003-acre parcel of land at 5307 Harroun Rd. on the northwest corner for $450 and an additional .006-acre parcel at 5239 Harroun Rd. on the southwest corner for $20,008 was authorized. Aller explained that the second acquisition will require the relocation of a driveway and other property improvements.
Aller’s request for the city to join with the Lucas County Board of County Commissioners to participate in the Northwest Ohio Transportation Safety Action grant program was approved.
Council authorized the city to enter a pass-through grant agreement for $200,000 with the state’s Department of Natural Resources. The funds will go toward Plummer Pool bathhouse renovations including upgrading restrooms to meet ADA standards and improvements to the pumping and filtration systems. Work on this project will begin at the conclusion of the swim season.
City Council also passed a resolution authorizing the city to apply for Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality along with Carbon Reduction Program grants for a Brint/Harroun Road roundabout. These grant programs are managed by TMACOG.
In other business, council gave a nod of approval to contribute $7,500 for the commercials promoting northwest Ohio during the recent LPGA/Dana Open tournament held at Highland Meadows.
Special tax assessments for ditch construction and/or maintenance; shade tree maintenance; and street lighting to be placed on property owners’ 2024 tax bills was given approval from council.
In addition, Aller’s request to offer one 2011 Ford pick-up truck and two 2013 Ford Police SUVs for auction on GovDeals.com was approved.
