Township talk …

Bids approved
The Sylvania Township Trustees authorized Road Superintendent Rob Nash to accept the $93,000 bid of Dirt Slingers Excavating for the 2024 Trellis Way Storm Sewer Improvement Project. The trustees also gave Nash the go-ahead to enter into a contract with A & J Landscape LLC  for the 2024 leaf pickup. Their bid of $530 per hour was complete, accurate, and the lowest and best bid according to Nash. His request to install temporary no parking signs on Westmar Court, Westcastle, and Elmer drives for Toledo Botanical Garden’s Crosby Festival of the Arts June 29-30 was also granted.
Fire levy on ballot
After passing a resolution at their June 4 meeting declaring the need for a fire levy on the November ballot, the Board of Township Trustees passed a resolution to place the 2.5 mill fire levy on the November ballot.
Obsolete equipment
Sylvania Township Fire Chief Chris Nye’s request to donate 12 Motorola XTS5000800 MHz portable two-way radios, battery chargers, batteries, belt clips, and compatible hand microphones to the Boy Scouts of America’s Camp Miakonda was approved. According to Chief Nye, the equipment is no longer public safety compliant and the BSA had identified a need for communication equipment.
Medical Oversight Director agreement
At  Chief Nye’s request, the trustees also voted in favor of authorizing Administrator Oliver Turner to enter into a formal Medical Oversight Director agreement and scope of services between Sylvania Township and Dr. Todd Brookens of Fire Medic Solutions, LLC, for services provided to Sylvania Fire-EMS,  effective as of January 1, 2024.  For several years, Dr.  Brookens has provided medical director services for the fire department without a contract and at no cost.
Administrator Turner was also given the authority to finalize and renew the contract with the Lucas County Prosecutor as Law Director for the township.
Board Representative
At the administrator’s request, the trustees endorsed Monclova Township Fire Chief Matt Homik to serve as the Lucas County Township Association representative on the OneOhio Recovery Foundation Region 4 Board. In March 2020, the State of Ohio and local governments throughout the state banded together to create The OneOhio Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), a one-of-a-kind in-the-nation agreement giving Ohio’s local governments a direct role in directing opioid funds to investment in programs that address prevention, treatment, recovery, public awareness, criminal justice, and other crucial services and implementing strategies for community recovery from the opioid crisis.
On Budget
Township Fiscal Officer David Simko reported that at the end of May revenue was over budget and expenditures were below budget. Simko credits staff in each township department for their outstanding job of curtailing expenses and operating under budget.
