A new era of luxury living for seniors is coming to life at Otterbein Sunset Village. The groundbreaking for The Railway, a highly anticipated luxury independent living neighborhood with a rich vintage rail travel theme, was held on July 9.
Drawing inspiration from the golden age of rail, The Railway captures the elegance, sophistication, and sense of journey that defined first-class travel. “This masterfully planned neighborhood for those 55 and older will feature 30 spacious villa homes, each designed with comfort, accessibility, and opulence in mind,” noted Dan Smith, Executive Director of Otterbein Sunset Village.
The villa homes include the 1,635 square-foot Porter, inspired by those who ensured every journey was flawless. The 1,774 square-foot Brakeman’s floor plan is based on the train crewmen who kept everything moving with precision. The third model, the 1,899-square-foot Conductor’s floor plan offers the most customizable design options.
Each of the three designs features private two-car garages, modern amenities, and barrier-free layouts for maintaining independence in an airy floor plan. The interior finishes, including high-end cabinetry, designer fixtures, and expansive windows, offer maintenance-free living.
“This is more than a community,” Smith offered. “The Railway is a lifestyle—one that brings together the charm of rail travel, the comfort of luxury living, and the freedom of maintenance-free independence. Residents will enjoy not only stunning new homes but also the amenities and hospitality Otterbein is known for,” he said. “Whether it’s the sound of gravel underfoot on a walk through landscaped paths or the gleam of brass and wood detailing in a shared space, every detail of The Railway evokes the elegance of a bygone travel era—revived and refined for today’s discerning 55-plus resident,” Smith pointed out.
“When it came to selecting the theme for this expansion, it made sense to honor our storied past, with the historic Allen Junction building on the southwest corner of our campus,” Smith explained.
This circa 1920 neighboring brick building, constructed by the Toledo & Western Railway Company, is located on the northeast corner of the property on Allen Road, north of Sylvania-Metamora Road. A railroad track was laid to run north from here. Titled the spur, it became known as Allen Junction, named for the T&W’s first president, Luther Allen. Trains stopped here at the Allen Junction depot to pick up those traveling east, west, or north until passenger service was discontinued in 1933.
