Wins the Good Deed Award

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 468 President Melissa Boyers, left, Veronica Motley, Ed.D, and School Board President Greg Feller congratulate Southview sophmore Mason Brown, second from left, who was presented the American Legion Auxiliary Good Deed award at the Feb. 9 School Board meeting. Last October, Brown spent his Halloween dressed as Kenny G and played his saxophone to lead a reverse food drive for Sylvania Area Family Services. Over 500 cans of food were collected and donated with the help of his parents to assist those struggling with food insecurity. The drive caught the attention of a member of American Legion’s Auxiliary Unit 468, who nominated Brown for the award. The American Legion Auxiliary Good Deed award was created in 2002 by the National Children & Youth Committee. This award is presented throughout the year to recognize the leadership in community service of youths high-school age or younger.
Timberstone Scientists at work

Sixth grader Derek Dower presents ‘Excercising Music,’ a study on how music affects the way subjects completed their workouts. Over a four month project, he tested the heart rates of four family members jamming out to either slow or fast music, or no music, and found that the music’s BPM correlated with heart rate.

Timberstone student Anastasia Shepherds learns about removing tomato sauce stains from a t-shirt using different ratios of baking soda and vinegar. She proves her hypothesis as she alters the amount of baking soda mixed with vinegar. She includes graphs measuring how well the stains washed out after the solution was applied.

Hannah Walt’s four-month-long study’s main “pointe” of interest was the age of each pointe shoe, testing whether the shoe’s beginning to break down with age would affect the amount of time that each ballerina could stay on pointe. In the end, the study concluded that the newer shoes offered better support, allowing the dancers to balance for a longer time.

Sixth grade Timberstone student Asher Kompenla presents his project on paper airplanes. The study compares different sizes of cardstock, determining which size is most effective in letting the airplanes soar. The colorful graph details the flights of each plane model, making it clear that the smallest plane can travel the most distance upon launch.
