Christian Home Care has done it again, winning two awards this year — the Blade’s Top Workplace award for the 13th year and the Leadership Award in the small business category for the third year. Christian Home Care has consistently been one of the top five companies or Small Businesses of 75 or fewer employees.
“We have received accolades from the state and local Chambers of Commerce, but the Top Workplace award means the most to me. This recognition is achieved through surveys completed by our staff and our caregivers. Caring starts ‘at home’ with our CHC family of employees and clients,” noted CHC owner Sue White-Johnson, a Sylvania area resident. “We invest in our people so they can be blessed to be a blessing,” she stated.
“Christian Home Care continues to rank high because we follow one simple rule, we treat people well. I believe in the Golden Rule to do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” she pointed out. “Also, everyone here encourages each other to grow personally and professionally. That includes all the staff and caregivers.
We value, respect, and appreciate each other and the diversity and uniqueness each of us brings to the melting pot we call Christian Home Care. No matter what the job, we are all prepared to roll up our sleeves to see that anything that needs to be done gets done,” White-Johnson said.
“Many of our staff and caregivers have been part of CHC since its inception. Longevity of staff and caregivers helps us to maintain consistency and the culture we want to foster.”
According to White-Johnson, caregivers have flexibility in their hours, can earn units of paid time off, and may also secure semi-annual, quarterly, and year-end bonuses. Paid CEUs are provided as well.
Christian Home caregivers provide personal care and companionship, which includes showering, hygiene, grooming, assistance with toileting, ambulation/walking, transfers, medication reminders, and exercises. Nursing assistants and companions offer domestic assistance such as light housekeeping, laundry, and meal prep, along with transportation for appointments, errands, church social events, respite, and end-of-life assistance in conjunction with various hospice programs. They make it a priority to engage with their clients.
“We become like family. Generally, anything that a family would do for a loved one we will do. That often gives family members the time to be a family, relieving them of caregiver tasks,” she offered.
“Our core values are taken seriously and include putting people first, especially our employees and clients. A second priority is providing exceptional service that not only meets but exceeds expectations. Other priorities are building relationships, promoting dignity, respecting individuals, and caring about our community. We are not affiliated with any specific church, but Christian values are embodied in our caregivers and staff,” White-Johnson offered.
“As a boutique home care agency, we strive to enhance the quality of life for the people we serve and for our coworkers as well. We create individually tailored care plans to provide the superior level of service that has become synonymous with our name. We are known for our devoted, compassionate, respectful approach to our services,” she noted.
Every year, the CHC staff chooses several local charities and charitable initiatives to help and support. “We give back to the community by participating in events that benefit others along with many organizations such as the Alzheimers Association, the Sylvania Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Ohio Gerontological Association, Private Duty Home Care Association, the National Home Care & Hospice Association, local food and toiletry drives, toy drives for children at Christmas, plus presentations for local churches, clubs, and community centers,” White-Johnson added.
White-Johnson joined the company as manager in 2010, a year after Jonette Braden Crabtree founded CHC, and purchased the business eight years later. “Since I began here, I have focused my efforts on running the business in a God-centered way. Every day and every moment gets turned over to Him,” she promised. “That is the compass I go by. Some clients have said that we are the service they’ve been praying for.”
According to White-Johnson, the company has had a broad range of diverse caregivers and clients through the years. “We assist people of every faith background and those who are not faith-based. We offer spiritual encouragement when requested or accepted. We always focus on exceeding the expectations of our clients and on the well-being and development of our caregivers. We hope people see our faith in action as Jesus’s hands, feet, head, and heart. We love what we do and how we do it. That is what draws people to Christian Home Care.”
