Sylvania City Council agreed to refer a proposed ordinance and resolution to a committee of the whole meeting scheduled for 6 pm on May 4. The measures relate to increasing transparency, affirming existing police policies, and reaffirming Sylvania’s commitment to safety and non-discriminatory policing.
Sylvania Safety City head teachers and aids were confirmed by council for the annual Sylvania Police summer program for children entering kindergarten in the fall. Sylvania Police Chief Danilynn Miller ’s request to offer a seized 2015 Range Rover for auction on GovDeals.com was approved.
Service Director Joe Shaw’s recommendation to accept the first amendment of $18,530 to Fishbeck’s engineering contract for Phase 2 of the Elden Ditch Watershed Improvements project was accepted.
A $2,400 contract with WorkSpring for an independent wellness program to be administered by HR Director Laura Smith was also approved.
City Council learned about plans for the annual fireworks celebration to be held on July 3. According to councilman Brian McCann, this year’s program will be bigger and better in celebration of America 250. Council approved authorizing an agreement with American Fireworks Company, who will present the display. The city provides this event joinltly with Sylvania Township and the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District, with each jurisdiction paying a third of the cost. McCann is activly soliciting donations and corporate sponsorships to offset the expense.
The next council meeting is scheduled for May 4 at 6:30 pm.
