The Professional Registered Nurse Honor Guard provides a dignified and spiritual final tribute to discharge fellow nurses from their duty. At a funeral home, memorial service, or grave site, the Florence Nightingale pledge is recited as part of the ceremony. The Nightingale pledge is first spoken after completion of nursing training.
During the ceremony, the PRN Nurses Honor Guard lights a symbolic Nightingale lamp representing the Call of Duty; the lamp is extinguished upon completion of the final call. This tribute is available to any active or retired nurse at the time of their passing. The ceremony demonstrates respect, dignity, and recognition for the departed nurse, and offers comfort to grieving family and friends.
Established in 2022, the PRN Nurses Honor Guard consists of UAW retired nurses who collaborate to honor colleagues at funerals or memorial events.
The group also seeks to work jointly with other Nurse Honor Guards in the region. To date, the PRN Nurses Honor Guard has participated in 137 funerals.
