In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Heritage Sylvania will host a Homecoming Picnic, a free public event at Burnham Park, 6950 Maplewood Ave., in downtown Sylvania, Saturday, July 4, from 10 am to 2 pm.
After 50 years, Sylvania’s Bicentennial time capsule is set to be opened during the picnic. In conjunction with state-wide community picnics, Sylvania’s Homecoming Picnic will have free activities and games for all ages, as well as a viewing tent for the artifacts that come out of the time capsule. The celebration will kick off with a 10 am reading of the Declaration of Independence by members of the community, with the opening of the capsule following at 10:30 am. Community members are encouraged to bring a meaningful item relating to the 250th anniversary or one that represents life today to place back into the vault. The capsule will be buried once again, to be reopened in 2076. There must be two identical items so one can go into the backup capsule. Items must be registered ahead of July 4 by emailing samantha@heritagesylvania.org.
“We believe that engaging with our neighbors in our shared local history keeps us better connected as a community and as a country,” said Tristen Turkopp, Heritage Sylvania’s programs and events manager. “This event is a great way for families and individuals to come together and celebrate a national and local milestone.”
Guests are invited to bring their own picnic to enjoy while at the park. Some seating will be available, but guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs.
