A solo exhibition of all new paintings by Chicago-based artist Carmen Chaparro opens in Hudson Gallery, 5645 N. Main St. in downtown Sylvania. This is Chaparro’s first solo show in the gallery. A closing reception is planned for June 26 from 6 to 8 pm.
According to gallery owners Scott and Barb Hudson, “This newest series of paintings is composed of oil, acrylic and airbrush with a focus on thinly applied layers of paint and feather light brush strokes to lessen the hand while remaining painterly. In this work there is a heavy emphasis on sunlight, pools at night and water. The figure is generally present but sometimes realized through other objects such as pottery or pool floats. There is an ambivalence and lack of specificity forcing one to become an observer rather than a participant in the scene. The paintings are in conversation with contemporary figure painting while also speaking to a disturbance of the idyllic space.”
Chaparro studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and remains based in that city.
