Memorial Day is time to remember

Memorial Day is a time for remembering and commemorating the lives of those who died while preserving the nation’s freedom. This is also a time to remember with pride those service men and women who are currently stationed overseas.

Sylvania Recreation, Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Sylvania, in conjunction with local Sylvania area veterans groups, will host the 2023 Sylvania Memorial Day events on Monday, May 29.
A Memorial Day Veterans Service begins at 9 am near the Veterans’ Memorial Monument in Toledo Memorial Park.

With over 14,000 veterans of all wars buried in the cemetery, parade participants will honor their remembrance with services, ceremonies, and patriotic band music. A “Sea of Flags” will decorate their graves. Local veteran groups and color guards will also visit Association, Ravine, and St. Joseph’s cemeteries at 8 am to honor fallen military personnel. Friends and families are invited to attend.

This year, the parade will assemble and start in the parking lot across the street from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church beginning at 10:15 am. Members of the Moose Family Lodge will distribute small American flags to parade attendees.

The parade will proceed north on Main Street, stopping at the bridge for a brief Memorial service before proceeding through downtown Sylvania, turning left on Erie Street to Garden Park Drive, then north to Veterans Memorial Field.

A Memorial Day service will begin at 11:15 am at Veterans Memorial Field under a tent with Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough serving as master of ceremonies.
