Whiteford students donate change

Whiteford Elementary Principal Andrew Duncan and fifth grade student Safa Younes present a check for $738.72 to Red Cross Executive Director Rachel Hepner-Zawodny to help earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey. Loose change was collected during a week in March for the school’s Change for a Cause project. The idea to help earthquake victims came from Safa Younes, who was born in Syria and has many relatives still living in the country. ‘I wanted to help the country and those who were hurt, but I couldn’t send money myself. I talked to our school counselor and she helped me with a way to get money to help them – and it was through the Red Cross.’ Whiteford’s Change for a Cause is coordinated through the School’s Kindness Club and those students helped in the daily collection from classrooms.
