Attorney Margaret Beck presented a document outlining the complaints of her clients and other homeowners regarding the pickleball courts in Memorial Field. She and several homeowners expressed concerns with the proximity of the courts to residences and the constant, repetitive sounds from play during the season. They cited health and mental health issues resulting from the noise generated at the courts. The group expressed interest in making City Council members aware of these issues and requesting any possible help in the matter.
There was a second reading of the proposed ordinance to approve the 2024 budget, which is available for Sylvania residents to view at cityofsylvania.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/11-6-2023-Packet.pdf. The third reading of the ordinance will be at the Dec. 4 meeting of city council.
In addition, an ordinance was passed to adopt the revised investment policies updated by Finance Director Toby Schroyer and his staff.
In other business, council approved the request of Safety and Service Director Kevin Aller to approve a change order to the agreement with Jim Palmer Excavating Inc. for the Elden Ditch Watershed Improvement project. According to Aller, additional trees needed to be removed at a cost of $4,200 for the construction of the detention basin in Veterans Memorial Park.
Aller’s request for council members to authorize advertising for bids for the Balfour Road waterline improvement project, which he wants to be completed before the interchange project gets underway, was approved. According to Aller, the old 4-inch and 6-inch waterline needs to be replaced with the now standard 8-inch waterline.
City council members re-appointed Mary Westphal for 2024 and Brian Kezur for a term expiring in 2026 to the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District Board of Trustees. Council members also re-appointed  Danny Royer and Stephen Risher to the Zoning Board of Appeals through 2026.
The next Sylvania City Council meeting will be held on Dec. 4 at 7:30 pm.
