Sylvania Township Police Chief Paul Long swears in new officers Jillian Woodruff and Taylor Perry at the Nov. 21 meeting of the Board of Township Trustees. Township Trustees meeting
The requests of Planning and Zoning Manager Daryl Graus to re-appoint members and alternate members to the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Zoning Commission were approved. BZA member Yuri Osterhout was re-appointed for a five-year term beginning January 2024 and ending December 2028. BZA alternate member Anthony Malik was re-appointed for a one-year term.
John King will serve another five years on the Zoning Commission until December 2028 and alternate member Joe Belinske was re-appointed for a one-year term.
Sylvania Township Administrator Oliver Turner’s request to re-appoint Maureen Atkin to a one-year term to Sylvania Arts was also approved.
Turner noted that there are three candidates interested in serving as the township’s representative to the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation Board. The trustees tabled this appointment until the Dec. 5 meeting to allow time to interview the prospective members.
In other business, Brandon Stansley of Recycle Services, LLC made a presentation outlining the family-owned glass recycling company and its current need to purchase to purchase robotic trash sorting equipment, which will expand the business.
On behalf of the Stansleys, Administrator Turner asked the trustees to approve a resolution to support and authorize the submission of an EPA Market Development Grant EPA not to exceed $200,000. The trustees approved the request.
Zoning change recommended
At the Nov. 15 meeting, the Sylvania Township Zoning Commission, in a three to two vote, recommended the zone change to C-2, general commercial, from RA, low density residential, for three parcels of land at 3203 Fairbanks Ave. The applicant, SDT 1 Properties, owner of the three parcels, is requesting the change to extend the parking lot that abuts the subject property to the south. The zoning change had been approved by the Lucas County Plan Commission and recommended by Township Planning and Zoning Manager Daryl Graus and the zoning staff. Several neighboring property owners spoke in opposition to the zoning change, citing concerns about property value and intrusion into a residential area.
