At the Feb. 3 meeting, Sylvania Service Director Joe Shaw’s recommendation to award a contract for $511,417 to Henry W. Bergman, Inc. for the Silica Drive-Summit and Erie streets resurfacing project was approved by Sylvania City Council members.
New vehicle purchases
Shaw’s requests for the purchase of a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 chassis from Dave White Chevrolet and a stainless-steel dump package from Kalida Truck Equipment, Inc. to replace the Parks & Forestry Department’s 23-year-old dump truck and a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 truck from Dave White Chevrolet and a liftgate package from Kalida Truck Equipment, Inc. to replace the 12-year-old vehicle for the same department were approved.
New equipment
City Council members also voted in favor of Shaw’s recommendation to accept the $106,980 proposal of Axon Enterprise, Inc. to replace Tasers for the Sylvania Police Department. This new equipment replaces the Tasers purchased in 2016.
Agreements
In other business, council members authorized Mayor Mark Frye and Finance Director Toby Schroyer to enter into three-year collective bargaining agreements with the Sylvania Police Command Officers’ Association on behalf of Sergeants and with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 129 on behalf of Patrolmen. They are also authorized to enter into an agreement with the Board of Lucas County Commissioners for the Suburban Court Services Program.
New councilman Shawn Murphy was appointed as council representative to the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District.
Public meeting
Downtown Sylvania resident Deb Chaney spoke to City Council on behalf of a group of concerned residents with specific questions on the planned removal of the traffic signal at Main Street and Maplewood Avenue as a part of the Downtown Transportation Improvements Project. Sylvania Mayor Mark Frye recommended further discussion be held at a future Streets Committee Meeting which was scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 pm.
