City beat …

At the May 5 Sylvania City Council meeting, members voted to authorize Service Director, Joe Shaw, to accept the $16,500 proposal from The EDGE Group for professional landscape, architectural and design services to develop gateway signage standards for the city of Sylvania. Shaw pointed out the relevance of developing signage standards now so the cost for appropriate and consistent signage can be built into the road construction project budgets. He envisions signage to be part of the Monroe Street/US 23 project, the Monroe/Erie streets roundabout, and South and North Main streets.
Shaw was also given approval to accept the $26,500 bid from Strayer Concrete for the city’s sidewalk replacement project. Shaw explained that the city is responsible for sidewalks damaged by city trees or utilities. Homeowners are responsible for all other sidewalk damages.
City council voted in favor of Shaw’s request to place several vehicles from the Parks, Streets, Water, and Zoning departments on GovDeals.com for sale.
Safety City Staff
Members of Sylvania City Council voted to hire a head teacher and accompanying staff for the upcoming Safety City organized by the Sylvania Police Department.
New Payroll Software
Finance Director Toby Schroyer’s proposal not to exceed $7,303.25 by Asure Customer & IP Holdco, LLC to provide payroll software was approved by council.
Mayor Mark Frye pointed out that the first L.E.A.D. graduation had recently been held at Highland Elementary School with 125 students participating. This program replaced the D.A.R.E. Program and was well received by the students, teachers and parents. New L.E.A.D. signs will be posted on each elementary school building once their first class graduates.
The next Sylvania City Council meeting will be held on May 19 at 7:30 pm.
