New Firefighters
Josh Howard, Brian Dotson, and Brenton Shank are sworn in by Sylvania Township Fire Chief Chris Nye at the May 7 Sylvania Township Board of Trustees’ meeting. The three have completed their one-year probation period and received pins from their wives while other family members looked on.
During the May 7 Sylvania Township Trustees meeting, Chief Nye was authorized to hire a compliance coordinator and a budget coordinator. The trustees voted in favor of Chief Nye’s resolution to apply for a congressional grant supporting a career tech training partnership. They also approved his proposal to purchase a custom, fourth-alarm, four-story extended WHLP training simulator.
Public Hearing Set
A public hearing has been set for the June 3 trustee meeting regarding developer Tim Brown’s request for street lighting for Brookside Plat 10.
Senior Center Levy
The trustees granted Sylvania Township Administrator Oliver Turner’s request to place the .50 mill levy additional tax for operation of the Sylvania Senior Center on the Nov. 4 ballot. The levy would amount to $17.50 for each $100,000 of the Lucas County Auditor’s appraised value.
Road Improvements
Gerken Paving, Inc., with a bid of $753,653.75, has been awarded the contract for the 2025 Sylvania Township road improvement project. Those projects include Merriman Road, Borland Drive, Arbor Way, Chapman Drive, Maryhill Drive, Huntley Drive, Trellis Way, Vineyard Road north of Maryhill Drive, Far Hills Road, Highpoint Drive, Southpoint Drive, and Hill River Drive.
Roads Superintendent Rob Nash was given authorization to offer conditional employment to Benjamin Sapp as a utility worker. The trustees also gave approval for Nash to install temporary No Parking signs on the township side of Elmer​ Drive for the Crosby Festival of the Arts, the third weekend in June.
Zoning Appeals
Members of the Board of Zoning Appeals remanded the request for conditional use for outdoor storage for the property located at 4460 W. Alexis Rd. to the Township Planning and Zoning Department for referral to the Lucas County Plan Commission. According to chairman, Yuri Osterhaut, following the April 7 public hearing evidence of zoning violations and environmental hazards were expressed, moving the issue from minor to major status warrenting examination by the county board.
BZA board members granted Lynn Grover of 5113 McGregor Lane an exception to temporaily live in a travel trailer on her property while her home is restored following a fire on March 15. The trailer has been placed as close as possible to the small garage d Soor on the owner’s driveway.
An appeal of a zoning violation for the installation of solar pan els on the front of the home by owner Aleksander Lucic of 7037 Ramblehurst Rd. was denied. According to Sylvania township Zoning Regulations, separate flush-mounted solar panels may only be located on a rear or side-facing roof.
