Road Construction
Sylvania City Council approved Service Director Joe Shaw’s recommendation to enter into a joint cooperation agreement, on behalf of the city of Sylvania, with the Lucas County Engineer’s Office for the Sylvania/Mitchaw/Frankfort/Crissey/Convent/Little roads resurfacing project. They also approved Shaw’s request to accept the $31,900 Feller Finch & Associates contract modification to provide engineering services for that project.
Shaw’s recommendation to accept DGL Consulting Engineers’ $93,458 contract modification for additional professional engineering services for the Downtown Transportation Improvement project was also approved.
Sign Ordinance Amendment
According to an ordinance adopted in 2006, all pole signs within the city will lose their legal nonconforming status effective Jan. 1, 2026. For 20 years the city has been working with businesses to convert their pole signs to monument signs with approximately 30 still remaining, many of which are along Monroe Street and Alexis Road. Given the significant amount of disruption to the Monroe Street and Alexis Road area that will occur with the US-23/Monroe interchange work, the administration proposed the idea of extending the effective date of the ordinance to Jan. 1, 2028, after all the interchange work has been completed. The Planning Commission has reviewed and recommended an approval of the extension. A public hearing has been set for July 21 for this zoning amendment.
Belarus Delegation
Mayor Mark Frye gave a brief update on the Belarus Delegation visit that took place with him and City Council members Shawn Murphy, Marcus Hansen, and Brian McMann on May 15. The members of the delegation spent a week in Lucas County learning about local government operations that they hope to use in the future. McCann said it seemed like the discussion gave them hope for their independence, and Hansen noted they were very interested in learning how our elections worked.
