Local vocalist Chris Joseph has just released ‘Way Off Broadway,’ Vol. I. just in time for the gift-giving holidays. The new album features music from many Broadway shows. Some of the songs are ‘Till There Was You,’ ‘My Favorite Things,‘ ‘On a Clear Day,’ ‘Applause,’ and several more. The album is available at Hip to the Groove, 5665 Main St. and Richard’s Music, 5806 Central Ave.
“I have always loved these songs. They bring back fond memories of the times I would sing these tunes with my mother at programs at the Manor House in Wildwood Park,” he reminisced. His mother, Helen Joseph, was a well-known and respected vocalist and vocal coach who sang everything from opera to Broadway hits. “She inspired so many people. I was always so proud of her when I saw her on stage in productions such as ‘Flower Drum Song,’ ‘Gigi,’ ‘Peter Pan,’ and ‘Camelot,’” he recalled.
Joseph also continues to build his own performance portfolio. Currently, he can be found accompanying the Skip Turner Jazz Band, appearing regularly at Rosie’s and Rosario’s. He is a regular entertainer during the Red Bird First Friday Art Walks, as well. Not just a vocalist, he also plays guitar, bass and piano.
Joseph began offering vocal lessons in the late 1970s while he was still in high school. He taught at the Ursula Caufield School of Music and held many lessons in the University of Toledo Music Room. Joseph insists that even non-singers who practice will develop skills and improve.
“We can do so much with diction and ear training. I always stress the importance of speaking clearly so people can understand you whether you are singing or just talking,” Joseph said.
“Voice lessons can be a great gift for that someone special in your life. I have gift certificates available,” he offered.
One of his vocal students, Jonathan James owner of Empowered for Excellence Behavorial Health, is a fan of Joseph both as a teacher and a vocalist. “He is a great teacher and coach. And he is a great singer. I love all of his albums and the many different tunes of Garland, Sinatra and the Broadway hits he has remade,” James pointed out.
Joseph’s releases include “Moonglow,” three “Tribute to Judy Garland” albums, and two albums of songs by Frank Sinatra. Local musician John Cleveland has collaborated on all of the albums.
