Leaf pickup
The fall leaf pickup, which began Oct. 20, is in the midst of its third cycle. Depending on weather conditions, at least four pickup cycles will be made. Road superintendent Rob Nash anticipates beginning the last pickup cycle on Dec. 1, weather permitting.
Leaves cannot be placed in the street or in plastic bags. Leaves should be placed at the curb or along the edge of the street, free of brush and garden waste, allowing crews to work efficiently. Crews are unable to pick up leaves mixed with brush and other items. Place leaves away from obstacles such as mailboxes, fire hydrants, landscaping timbers, and landscaping rocks. These obstacles can cause injury to crews and equipment, and reduce efficiency. During peak times one cycle through the Township requires approximately 17 days.
Distinguished Citizen Service Award
Each year, the Sylvania Township Trustees recognize unsung community heroes with the Distinguished Citizen Service Award. The trustees want to highlight those volunteers who have given of themselves for the betterment of the community and their fellow citizens.
The award is designed to honor residents of Sylvania and the Township whose voluntary efforts have improved the community, but have largely been undertaken quietly and without recognition.
This award specifically excludes elected officials from consideration or anyone who may have already been honored by the naming of a street, park, or other public space.
Anyone from Sylvania Township or the city of Sylvania who would like to nominate a person to be considered for the honor may email the information to Oliver Turner, Sylvania Township Administrator by Jan. 15, 2026 at oturner@sylvaniatownship.com, mail or drop off nominations at the Sylvania Township Administration Building, 4927 N. Holland-Sylvania Rd.
BZA approves variance
The Board of Zoning Appeals approved the request of Alyssa Cain for a variance of 30 feet for a setback for a privacy fence on her property from the right-of-way line and along the eastern property line at 3360 Waldmar Rd. She would like to replace the six-foot high privacy fence along the eastern boundary with a new six-foot privacy fence. Sylvania Township Zoning Code, Section 1307(B) dictates that a fence within a front setback can be no higher than three feet for solid privacy fencing and no higher than four feet for open fencing and Section 700 mandates a thirty-foot front setback for parcels in the R-A zone district.
Zoning Board approves zoning change
The Sylvania Township Zoning Board voted unanimously to approve the request for a zoning change for 9125 and 9251 W. Central Ave. from A-3, Agriculture to R-4, High Density Residential. The property owners want to develop a three-story, 354-unit multi-family complex on the site. Work will be done in two phases. This issue will be on the agenda for the Sylvania Township Board of Trustees” Dec. 2 meeting.
