
Jonah Meyer-Crothers Day
Sylvania Mayor Mark Frye declared Nov. 17 as Jonah Meyer-Crothers Day in a proclamation at the Sylvania City Council meeting. Meyer-Crothers was a member of the United States Men’s Cerebral Palsy National Soccer Team that won the 2025 COPA America International Federation of Cerebral Palsy Football played in the International Tournament in Uruguay in October. He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Meyer-Crothers is a 2022 graduate of Sylvania Northview, where he was a member of the soccer team. He is currently a student at Calvin University, Grand Rapids, Mich., and a member of their soccer team
Budget approved
City Council members approved the 2026 budget after a second reading.
Bid approved
City of Sylvania’s Service Director Joe Shaw’s request to accept the $937,064 bid of FET Construction Services for the aerial utility bury project for the second block of Main Street was approved by council.
Change orders
Members also approved Shaw’s request for change orders for Phase 1 of the Downtown Transportation Improvement project of $130,708.43 and the change order for the Centennial Road Sanitary Sewer Extension, saving the city $4,770 from the original contract.
Water and sewer rates
Council voted in favor of Shaw’s recommendation to increase water service charges from $8.75 to $9.45 per one thousand gallons for city users and from $10.94 to $13.68 for non-city users. Sewer rates for both industrial and non-industrial city and non-city users will increase from $5.56 to $6.67 per 1,000 gallons.
SAJRD appointment
In other business, George Hilfinger was re-appointed to the Sylvania Area Joint
Recreation Board of Trustees for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2028.
Public hearing
A public hearing date of Jan. 5, 2026, was set for a Special Use Permit requested by William Gross to build an open carport at 5910 Balfour Rd.
License plate reading cameras
The Sylvania Police Chief’s request to renew the contract for the 15 license plate reading cameras and to purchase two new cameras was approved by a vote of six to one.
Sister City Holiday Parade
Mayor Mark Frye reported on the Sister City Holiday Parade in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, the weekend of Nov. 14-16. He and a delegation of Sister City committee members, including Police Chief Danilynn Miller and Sylvania Town Crier Mike Lieber, attended the event and were part of the 89-float Christmas parade. Mayor Frye also joined in a curling match during the weekend.
The next Sylvania City Council meeting will be held Dec. 1 at 7:30 pm.
