
Sylvania Municipal Judge Michael Bonfiglio administered the oath of office to the newly elected Mayor, Mark Frye. He then swore in re-elected council members Mary Westphal, Patrick Richardson, Marcus Hansen, and newly elected Shawn Murphy before the Jan. 5 meeting. Mary Westphal was also re-elected City Council President. She announced that council committee assignments would remain the same for 2026.
During the regular meeting, Mayor Frye presented Bill Sanford with a proclamation, naming Jan. 9 as Bill Sanford Day in recognition of his retirement after 15 years. Sylvania Township Administrator Oliver Turner, joined by Trustees Jill Johnson and John Jennewine, presented Sanford with a gift commemorating his cooperative work with the township.
Council passed several ordinances relating to administrative and departmental organizations within the city to reflect new titles and salaries.
Sylvania’s Service and Safety Director Joe Shaw’s recommendation for a change order to the Water Storage Tank maintenance agreement with L.C. United Painting Co. was approved. A $500 deduction from the original contract of $48,000, as one part of the work on the Ground Storage Tank, is going to be deferred to 2028 when the tank is painted. Shaw’s recommendations to enter into license agreements with Software Solutions for $54,100, Hyland Software Inc. for $30,320, and Rarestep Inc., dba Fleetio, for $21,960 for software upgrades were approved.
At Shaw’s recommendation, City Council members accepted the $220,000 Tetra Tech proposal for engineering services for the Centennial and Little roads intersection improvement project. They also accepted the $551,590.80 FET Construction Services LLC bid for the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon Replacement project for Highland and Sylvan Elementary, McCord Junior High, and Southview High schools. According to Shaw, the FET bid was 24.6 percent under the estimated cost.
The next Sylvania City Council meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 6:30 pm.
