
The newly elected Sylvania Township Trustee, Jill Johnson, was sworn into office by Trustee Board Chairman Neal Mahoney before the Jan. 6 meeting of the board. Her husband, Larry, held the Bible which she took her oath of office on.
At the regular meeting, Trustee John Jennewine nominated Johnson, who was then elected as board chairwoman, succeeding Mahoney. The trustees also approved several organizational resolutions, including authorizing Township Administrator Oliver Turner and Project Specialist Samantha Didion to serve as designees for elected officials for Certified Public Records. Training for this is required under the Ohio Revised Code. The trustees also approved board and committee appointments.
The three trustees, Jill Johnson, John Jennewine, and Neal Mahoney, along with fiscal officer David Simko, congratulated new police officer Cody Brieschke, who was sworn into duty by Sylvania Township Police Chief Sarah Toth. A Sylvania native, Brieschke was recently honorably discharged from the Air Force and has returned to serve his community as a member of the Sylvania Township Police Department.
Township’s TARTA Board representative Joel Beren offered an update on the transit company and its diversity of rolling stock, better geared to serve the needs of each community in the district. He has chaired the strategic planning committee and is involved in mapping the forward direction of the company.
Following a public hearing, the trustees voted to approve a zone change from C-2 general commercial to R-A, low-density residential for the property owner of 4845 Vineyard Rd., making the property available for sale. Part of the lot had been zoned C-2, while the remainder was R-A.
The next Sylvania Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Jan. 20 at 5 pm.

Members of the Board of Zoning Appeals approved an exception for the property owner of 3331 Waldmar Rd. for an addition to a legal, non-conforming building with conditions. The board also approved the homeowner’s request, which had been tabled at the Dec. 1 meeting, for a variance for a side yard setback from the required 10 feet to five feet with conditions
