From a grade school student’s sketchbook to citywide celebrations, Sylvania is embracing history in a very local way as it joins communities across Ohio and the nation in marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.
At the center of the celebration is a contest-winning logo — Sylvania: America 250! — designed by Highland Elementary School fifth-grader Audrey Muehlfeld. The logo will appear throughout the year on promotional materials and at events commemorating the nation’s founding, offering a youthful stamp on a milestone 250 years in the making.
As it did during the Bicentennial in 1976, the Sylvania community is rallying around the anniversary with activities that blend tradition, history, and hands-on fun.
“We plan to make this semiquincentennial celebration even bigger — reviving some classic traditions while adding new favorites,” said Samantha Ayres, executive director of Heritage Sylvania, who is coordinating the volunteers planning the events. “From community baseball games and picnics to dances, movie nights, and an epic time capsule unveiling and reburial, this is about bringing people together.”
Two major initiatives will run throughout the year. The Sylvania 250 Scavenger Hunt invites residents to explore their city by searching for 250 historic sites and items. New images will be released monthly beginning in March. Participants can submit their discoveries to Heritage Sylvania for small prizes, with each entry also earning a chance at a grand prize. A QR code to participate will be posted beginning March 1.
History Tours, the second yearlong event, will offer guided 90-minute walking tours through downtown Sylvania. Led by Heritage Sylvania, the tours highlight the people, places and moments that shaped the city over the past 143 years. The route runs along Main Street between Erie and Monroe streets. Tours must be scheduled in advance and cost $20 per person, with a minimum of 10 guests. Registration is available by calling 419-517-5533 or visiting heritagesylvania.org.
Additional events are planned throughout the year, including a Founders Ball on a date to be announced.
Public art and living history also play a role. On March 6, the Roots of Sylvania mural — painted in 2015 by local artist Dani Fuller and located behind Interrupt Marketing at 6622 Maplewood Ave. — will be officially recognized by the America 250-Ohio Commission’s Murals Across Ohio initiative.
On April 27, city and county officials will plant one of Ohio’s 88 Heritage white oak trees on the lawn of the Sylvania Administration Building. America 250-Ohio is planting a white oak in each county to honor Ohio’s role in the nation’s founding, with Sylvania selected to host the Lucas County tree.
History will take to the field May 16 when the Sylvania Black Swamp Frogs face off against a team of local “celebrities” in a Community Vintage Base Ball Game at Veterans’ Memorial Field. Played at noon using 1920s-era rules on a grassy field, the game pairs period-style play with modern food trucks.
The Memorial Day Parade on May 25 will carry a Sylvania: America 250 theme, followed by a community movie night June 18 featuring “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” courtesy of Mayberry Ice Cream.
Independence Day festivities will anchor the summer. The annual Star-Spangled Celebration on July 3 leads into a full schedule on July 4, including the traditional reading of the Declaration of Independence, the unveiling of Sylvania’s 1976 time capsule, and an All-American Homecoming picnic at Burnham Park.
The celebration continues into fall with a concert in the park at a date to be announced, sponsored by Sylvania Outdoor Community Parks; Ohio Goes to the Movies on Sept. 4 will take place in the Historical Village with a showing of “Best in Show,” along with additional, fun activities.
Sylvania: Amerca 250 events will culminate during the annual Fall Festival on Oct. 17 and 18.
“The events are designed not only to honor the past, but to invite residents to experience it — one logo, landmark, and shared moment at a time,” Ayres promised.
