
Sylvania Township Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Bennett and Chief Chris Nye administered the oath to Firefighter/EMTs Marc Tanner and Ferras Hebaichi before they received their pins at the Board of Township Trustees’ Feb. 17 meeting.
Fire/EMS Academy
Following the ceremony, Assistant Chief Bennett and Sylvania Schools Career Readiness Coordinator Steve Urbanski presented their new CareerTech partnership and outlined the proposed Fire/EMS Academy to be in operation next fall. According to Urbanski, he and his staff have been exploring possibilities to add the Fire/EMS Academy to the Career Tech program for the last few years. He said when Assistant Chief Bennett approached him with the Fire Department plans for an academy, he felt “the stars aligned” as the timing was perfect to form a partnership.
New hire
In other business, Zoning Supervisor Daryl Graus recommended that the board authorize Township Administrator Oliver Turner to hire Enriquillo ‘Rick’ Abreu as part-time Code Enforcement Officer.
The Trustees authorized Road Superintendent Rob Nash to accept Gerken Paving’s $688,384.85 bid for the 2026 Sylvania Township Road Improvement Project. Nash was also given approval to advertise for bids for a yard waste drop-off site as the current service contract expires on Dec. 31, 2026.
The trustees approved Sylvania Township Police Chief Sarah Toth’s request to purchase the additional pre-installed equipment for $ 9,011 for the three vehicles she was authorized to purchase at the Feb. 2 meeting. The trustees certified the Promotional Eligibility List.
At Township Administrator Oliver Turner’s request, a Public Hearing to discuss developer Brandon Wamsher’s street lighting petition for River Tree Plat II will be held on March 17 at 5 pm. Following a Public Hearing, the trustees approved Wamsher’s petition for street lighting in Twelve Lakes Plat 13.
The next Board of Township Trustees meeting will be held on March 3 at 5 pm.
Zoning Commission
John King was reelected as chairman, and Tom Creque will continue to serve as vice chairman of the Sylvania Township Zoning Commission. The meeting will continue to be held at 6 pm on the second Wednesday in Township Hall.
