At the top of the City Council’s March 2 agenda, City Council President Mary Westphal gave a brief report on the Committee of the Whole gathering held before the meeting to continue discussions on Proposed Ordinance No. 37-2026, Federal Immigration Enforcement. Several members of the community were in attendance; 22 residents of the area spoke in favor of and against the proposed ordinance. Councilwoman Lyndsay Stough made a motion, which was passed, for the administration to prepare different legislation on this topic within 90 days. Councilman Doug Haynam, who introduced the ordinance at the Feb. 2 meeting, said he plans to put the legislation on the November ballot if council does not pass the issue.

Roundabout progress

City council approved Joe Shaw’s request to purchase .052 acres of land at the southeast corner of Erie and Monroe street as the right of way for the Monroe and Erie steeets roundabout for $10,390 from Suzanne Baldwin, a temporary construction easement from Brandon and Emilee Duffey for $300, and to accept a warranty deed for the city-owned parcel on the southwest corner to be dedicated as a right-of-way for the same project.

New vehicles

Shaw was given authority to purchase a new Kenworth Single-Axle Truck from Whiteford Kenworth in South Bend, Ind., for $118,326 and the associated dump package from Kalida Truck Equipment Inc. for $49,000 for the Water Dept., replacing a 1999 dump truck to be sold on GovDeals when the new truck is delivered.

His request to replace a 2001 Ford 550 with 82,067, miles to be sold on GovDeals, with a 2026 Chevy Silverado 5500 truck from Dave White for $62,723.28 and a dump package from Kalida Truck Equipment Inc. for $37,200, was also approved.

Agreement

Council approved an agreement with Archer Energy to supply natural gas to residents and small commercial businesses.

CRA established

In other business, council members agreed to establish the Little-Centennial Community Reinvestment Area in the city of Sylvania, designating a Housing Officer to administer the program, and creating a Community Reinvestment Housing Council and a Tax Incentive Review Council.

Appointment

Members of City Council confirmed Mayor Mark Frye’s appointment of Zachary Liber to the Municipal Planning Commission for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2027. He replaces Ken Marciniak, who resigned from the position.

The next Sylvania City Council meeting will be held on March 16 at 6:30 pm.
