After 40 years, Hegde Walker Emans clients still come first

Four decades into his career, David Walker still approaches financial advising the same way he did on day one, by asking a simple question: “What would I do if I were in their place?”

That mindset has guided Walker, a Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter, throughout his 40 years with Hegde Walker Emans Financial Legacy Group, where he remains a steady presence in both the office and the lives of his clients.

“We are in the business of helping people, and there is nothing more rewarding,” Walker said.

Walker’s path into the financial world wasn’t exactly planned. After graduating from college, he took a position with a financial firm — in the very same office suite his company still occupies today — expecting it might be a stepping stone to a career in corporate sales.

Instead, he found something that clicked. “I’ve always liked puzzles and solving mysteries,” he said. “I learned that skill would be very helpful in this business.”

He quickly discovered something else, too. “Early on, I thought we were in the financial business,” Walker said with a laugh. “But I quickly learned this is a people business.”

That realization helped shape what would come next.

In 1986, just four years into his career, Walker and fellow advisor Robbie Hedge struck out on their own, forming Hedge Walker while remaining in the same office. The firm grew steadily, built on relationships as much as results.

After Hegde’s untimely death, his wife, Sujata Hegde, stepped in and continued serving clients until her retirement in 2016 — a transition that Walker said reflected the deeply personal nature of the business.

“It’s always been about taking care of people,” he said.

The company evolved again in 2019, when it became Hegde Walker Emans Financial Legacy Group, marking the addition of Walker’s daughter, Kalin Emans, as a partner and signaling a new generation of leadership.

Today, the firm offers a full range of services, from insurance and investments to estate and income tax planning—a comprehensive approach that Walker believes meets clients where they are. “We help our clients with their financial goals regardless of their assets,” he said.

Still, for all the services the firm provides, Walker measures success in simpler terms. “Our goal is to keep our clients happy,” he said. “That is easier than finding new ones.”

It’s a philosophy rooted in consistency, and one that has carried him through 40 years in the same office, doing work that never feels routine.

Because, for Walker, the equation has never really changed.
Put yourself in the client’s place.

And help them solve the puzzle.
