The Sylvania City Council approved property acquisitions for the planned Erie and Monroe streets roundabout project and discussed potential updates to downtown zoning regulations during its recent meeting.

Councilman Doug Haynam reported on an Annexation and Zoning Committee meeting held prior to the regular council session. Haynam said committee members held an extensive discussion regarding whether updates are needed to the city’s Central Business District zoning code.

To assist in the review, City Law Director (B-3) Leslie Brinning was asked to compare the SmithGroup proposal section by section with the city’s current Central Business District zoning regulations. Haynam suggested the committee continue evaluating the proposed changes before making recommendations to council.

Council members approved Service Director Joe Shaw’s recommendation to acquire right-of-way and temporary construction easements needed for the Erie-Monroe roundabout project.

The city will purchase 0.056 acres from John and Theresa Dunigan for $43,900. The acquisition includes one tree, two shrubs and a portion of a driveway. Council also approved the purchase of 0.039 acres from Brian T. May for $53,500.

In other business, council authorized Shaw to purchase a new McNeilus M5 11-cubic-yard yard waste truck for $192,145. The vehicle will replace the city’s current green yard waste pickup truck, which has been in service since 2009.

The new truck includes a tailgate, alley-side camera system and a center-mounted toter grabber arm on the rear of the truck.

Council also authorized Shaw to sell a 1997 Interstate trailer that is no longer in use through GovDeals.

Mayor Mark Frye reported that the city received a letter from the committee designated in the initiative petition for the Sylvania Resource Conservation and Equal Access Ordinance requesting legislation to place the measure on the November ballot.

The request to place the measure on the ballot will be considered at the June 15 City Council meeting that begins at 6:30 pm.
