City Council President Mary Westphal, presided as Mayor Pro Tem in the absence of Mayor Mark Frye. Marcus Hansen was designated as Council President Pro Tem to start the June 15 meeting.

Robert Lubell of Harroun Road addressed members of Sylvania City Council and the Administrative staff regarding the growing deer population and the damage being done to the gardens in his yard. He outlined options other communities are doing to curb this problem and requested that council explore possibilities. Westphal noted that the appropriate committee would address the issue.

In other business, members of city council voted in favor of the resolution to submit the Initiative Petition regarding the Sylvania Resource Conservation and Equal Access Ordinance to be placed on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Council members also voted to establish a Brint/McCord TIF (Tax Increment Equivalent Fund) to encourage improvements and redevelopment of the select properties in that district. The increase in assessed property value is exempt from taxation; however, property owners pay a service payment, which is used for public infrastructure improvements directly benefiting the parcels in the TIF district.

Thanks to council members’ affirmative vote, city of Sylvania employees will have the opportunity to receive a 10 percent scholarship to the University of Toledo. This is available for current or new part- or full-time students attending class in person or opting to take online classes.

The two petitions for Special Use Permits, (SUPs) zoning ordinance amendments, were both referred to the Plan Commission for review. The first request from Donald A. Perrucci, Trustee, is for the Rite Aid property at 8310 Sylvania Metamora Rd. Plans call for adding a fueling station and renovating the existing building to include a convenience store in the front, a drive-through car wash in the middle of the building, and a third retail space. The second request from Matt DeWood is to demolish the Rite Aid building in Sylvania Marketplace, add fueling stations, and develop a portion of the site for drive-through beverage service as a first phase of redevelopment for the complex.

Council members approved Service Director Joe Shaw’s recommendation to accept the $43,476 bid from the Jennite Company to replace 84 slabs of sidewalk in 24 locations for the 2026 Sidewalk Replacement Program.

Shaw was also authorized to ammend the Tetra Tech proposal for additional engineering services for the Centennial and Little roads intersection improvement projects.

Before the meeting adjourned, a Safety Committee meeting was scheduled for July 6 at 5:30 pm to discuss electric bicycles, scooters, mopeds, motorbikes, and more.
