Township talk …

During the opening of the June 16 Sylvania Township Board of Trustees meeting, trustee John Jennewine requested that a Noise Resolution be added to the agenda and noted there were interested residents in attendance.


Roads and Service Department Superintendent Rob Nash, received approval to enter into a contract with Gerken Paving Inc. for $1,627,203 to complete a township OPWC paving resurfacing project.


Fire Chief Chris Nye’s request for authorization to hire one full-time firefighter/paramedic, Timothy Schisler, was approved. This keeps the department at 73 career full-time employees.


The Sylvania Township Police Department is also in need of hiring three officers. An eligibility list was approved.


Township Administrator Oliver Turner’ request for approval of the street lighting petition submitted by Tim Brown, Sylvania Cobblestones Dev. Inc., for Bridgecreek Plat 7, was approved.


The township’s noise ordinance was discussed during the public hearing portion of the meeting. Residents asked for clarification regarding citizen-issued citations and police-issued citations. This topic is under discussion by township officials, and more information will be forthcoming.


Department quarterly reports were presented and approved.


Roads Superintendent Rob Nash, reported that his staff completed the spring brush and leaf pickup, provided cemetery spring clean up and maintenance, did pothole repairs, sign repairs, inspected and cleaned 140 catch basins during the second quarter of 2026. In addition, several resurfacing projects have been completed, including the Parklands, Brint Crossings, and Park Place subdivisions, along with the Comstock Ditch cleanout and the J. Cunningham Ditch restoration and storm sewer improvements. The staff also provided regular maintenance to township facilities, completing 244 work orders.

Planning and Zoning Manager Daryl Graus presented the second quarter report, noting there was a 20.2 percent rise in zoning permits, resulting in an 83.7 percent increase in the estimated value of the projects for March through May 2026. During the quarter, 36 single-family dwelling permits were issued, up 38.5 percent from the same time period in 2025, with a total estimated value of $16.691 million, a 71.0 percent hike. The average estimated value per dwelling is $463,643.
