When summer heats up bold red wines and boozy bottles can feel a little too heavy. For cookouts, picnics, and easy dinners outside, lighter and crisp wines with bright acidity, softer tannins, and lower alcohol are the way to go. Think refreshing, vibrant sips that keep things light and easygoing, making grilled favorites and seasonal dishes feel a little more relaxed. The pairing guide below suggests the type of wine to pair with summer foods. It also includes recipe suggestions from my online cookbook, Sizzle Simmer Sauté Sylvania, so you can mix and match meals and wines with ease. Find these recipes plus many more that I’ve written over the years at sylvaniaadvantage.com – just type in the recipe name and you’re good to go.
Quick Summer Pairing Guide

- Crisp Whites (Sauvignon Blanc & Pinot Grigio): Great with oysters, seafood, goat cheese, key lime pie, and citrusy foods. Their bright acidity and lighter body work well with briny flavors and tangy dressings without taking over the whole plate. Try them with my Citrus Salad (February 2021).
- Bright Rosés (Provençal & Pinot Noir Rosé): Easy picks for grilled chicken, charcuterie, and berry salads. Rosés bring light berry flavors without the heavy tannins that can feel harsh on a hot day. Pair them with Whipped Feta with Roasted Strawberries (June 2024) or Balsamic Baked Chicken and Strawberry Tortellini Salad with Citrus Poppyseed Dressing (April 2023).
- Sparkling Wines (Prosecco & Crémant): Perfect with fried foods like chicken and french fries, creamy pastas, and spicy bites. The bubbles keep things fun and fresh, cutting through salty, crispy, and rich foods with every sip. A little Chile Con Queso (April 2024) would make a great complement.
- Chilled Light Reds (Gamay & Pinot Noir): A solid match for burgers, flatbread, and pasta salads. Give the bottle about 30 minutes in the fridge, and the wine will taste brighter, juicier, and more refreshing. Try them with my Peach and Prosciutto Flatbread with Hot Honey(August 2022).
The easiest trick is to keep things fresh, chilled, and not too heavy. With the right bottle, even a simple summer meal can feel brighter, cooler, and a lot more fun to share.
