Sylvania runners win again

Team August, with Northview and Southview runners Daniel Lavalette, Victor Ford, Ryne Newnham, Will Rees, and Isaac Carl, takes first place honors at the 2023 Glass City Marathon.

Daniel Lavalette, Victor Ford, Ryne Newnham, Will Rees, and Isaac Carl met while running cross country and track at McCord Junior High School. The four have remained friends despite now being at rival high schools. Northview runners include junior Lavalette and senior Ford, who plans to go to Purdue or Miami University, and Newnham, who will attend Miami University. Southview runners are seniors Rees, who will enroll at Ohio State University, and Carl, who is enlisting in the Air Force.

Every year throughout high school, these five friends have come together to run the Glass City Marathon as a relay team. Their team, “August,” named after their junior high relay baton, is undefeated, finishing first every year they have participated in the competition.

This year they ran their fastest time of 2:40, a Glass City Marathon record.

“It’s always nice to see youth getting involved in the sport of running. Team August has been showing up, winning, and improving their team time over the last few years,” offered Clint McCormick, senior event director. “I think that this shows the type of event the Toledo Road Runners Club hosts each year. The marathon is truly a generational, family friendly event. As with most sports and clubs, when the youth get involved and enjoy successes, the future of the sport is healthy.”
