Zoning issues
The homeowner of 5629 Webster Rd. was granted a zoning change from general commercial, C-2 to Low Density Residential R-A by the trustees following a public hearing where no objections were offered. According to Zoning Manager Daryl Graus, the parcel on which the home is located is split-zoned R-A and C-2. The property has been continually used as a residence and the zoning change allows the property owner to obtain financing or refinancing.
The Sylvania Township Board of Trustees voted to notify the owners Paul and Jane Thompson that their 8990 Brint Rd. home had been inspected and declared insecure, unsafe, or structurally defective by the Township Fire Department. The owners are entitled to request a hearing before the 30-day scheduled demolition.
Street lighting approved
With no objections from the scheduled public hearing, the trustees voted to approve the street lighting petition for Waterside Sylvania Plat 11.
Nuisance abatement
The trustees also passed a resolution to authorize sending notices to the property owners: 3239 and 3234 Knoll Ave., 5944 Greenacre Rd., 4538 Vineyard Rd., 7443 Country Meadow Ct., and 2236 N. McCord Rd. to remove vegetation and debris within seven days to abate the nuisance. If not done, the property owners will be charged for the mowing and debris removal by the Zoning and Planning Department.
New employee
The trustees granted Road Superintendent Rob Nash’s request to offer conditional employment to mechanic Darren Osmun.
In other business, Trustee Chairman Neal Mahoney’s appointment of Jill Johnson to the Investment Committee was approved.
The next Board of Township Trustees meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 5 pm.
Distinguished Citizen Award
Do you know that special person who goes above and beyond making a difference in the community? The Sylvania Township Trustees would like to recognize those unsung heroes of the community with the Distinguished Citizen Award. The award is designed to recognize residents of Sylvania and the Township whose voluntary efforts have improved the community but have largely been undertaken quietly and without recognition. The Township Trustees want to shine a light on the high-impact volunteers who have given of themselves for the betterment of the community and their fellow citizens.
The award program specifically excludes elected officials from consideration or anyone who may have already been honored by the naming of a street, park, or other public space for them.
Anyone from Sylvania Township or the city of Sylvania who would like to nominate a person to be considered for the honor should direct the information to Oliver Turner, Sylvania Township Administrator by Sept. 29. Turner can be reached via email at oturner@sylvaniatownship.com or by mailing or dropping off a nomination at the Sylvania Township Administration Building, 4927 N. Holland-Sylvania Rd.
Variance request denied
At the Sept. 9 meeting members of the Sylvania Township Board of Zoning Appeals denied the 6800 Shieldwood Rd. property owner’s variance request for the seven-foot required setback to be one-foot to accommodate the construction of a carport. Following an executive session the decision was reached and was based on the fact that a hardship or special circumstances were not evident.
