Annual Border Battle Food Drive underway

Donation tables for the fourth annual Border Battle Food Drive are set up at the Sylvania Township Hall, 4927 Holland-Sylvania Rd., open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. The food drive to restock Sylvania Area Family Services Food Bank and Christmas Food Baskets goes through Nov. 27.
There is a display set up in the Township Hall lobby where non-perishable, non-expired food donations can be placed. Please set donations on the side of the table decorated for your favorite team.
Leaf pickup
The fall leaf pickup, which began Oct. 21, is in the midst of its second cycle. Depending on weather conditions, at least three pickup cycles will be made. Road superintendent Rob Nash anticipates beginning the third pickup cycle on Dec. 2, weather permitting.
Leaves cannot be placed in the street or in plastic bags. Leaves should be placed at the curb or along the edge of the street, free of brush and garden waste allowing crews to work efficiently. Crews are unable to pick up leaves mixed with brush and other items. Place leaves away from obstacles such as mailboxes, fire hydrants, landscaping timbers, and landscaping rocks. These obstacles can cause injury to crews and equipment, and reduce efficiency. During peak times one cycle through the Township requires approximately 17 days.
Variance denied
At its Nov. 4 meeting, the Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously denied a variance request for a building setback from 20 feet to 12 feet. The applicant wishes to demolish the present gas station built in 1984 at 5910 W. Central Ave. and construct a new, larger Speedway Gas Station and 7-Eleven Convenience Store. Jonathan Wocher, AICP, LEED GA of Cincinnati-based McBride Dale Clarion cited the company’s position and request stating that the variance is… “necessary in order to maintain adequate vehicular circulation around the site for the fuel canopy and fuel tanks.”
According to BZA Chairman, Jason Levine, a hardship must to be presented for a zoning variance to be granted, which the board agreed was not done in this case.
Central Avenue Overlay District amended
The Sylvania Township Trustees voted to amend Section 504 of the Sylvania Township Zoning Resolution to remove “Truck Wash” from the list of excluded uses within the Central Avenue Overlay at their regular meeting on Nov. 6. The decision will allow developers to construct a truck terminal/wash at 8110 W. Central Ave. west of King Road.
