Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough, center, is surprised to receive an award from Sylvania Township Administrator Oliver Turner, and Sylvania Township Trustees Jill Johnson, Neal Mahoney, and John Jennewine at his final City Council meeting on Dec. 16.

Sylvania Township Trustees Neal Mahoney, Jill Johnson, and John Jennewine along with Township Administrator Oliver Turner attended the Dec. 16 Sylvania City Council meeting to express their appreciation for Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough’s many years of service and to extend their best wishes for his retirement.
Tara Haye, Caitlin Slattery, and Elizabeth Dower of the Stranahan PTO were on hand to learn that Sylvania City Council voted to approve a $10,000 contribution to their organization’s campaign to build an inclusive and accessible community playground at Stranahan Elementary School. According to Haye, president of the PTO, the group has raised 90 percent of the needed funds and plans are to begin construction in June.
In other business, Sylvania Service Director Joe Shaw’s requests for change orders were approved. The first is for additional work on the Plummer Pool Bath House renovations. An additional $15,382.24 is required for VanTassel Construction to replace the exterior doors to the pump room, remove two interior chase walls, level the concrete floors in previous shower locations, and provide wood joist privacy blocking above CMU walls. The second request is the final change order for Phase three of the large diameter sanitary sewer lining project and the South Main Street Sanitary sewer rehabilitation. An additional $31,393.59 is required to complete the contract with Inliner Solutions LLC.
Shaw was authorized to advertise for bids on the Silica Drive, Summit and Erie streets resurfacing projects.
In addition, Shawn Murphy was re-appointed to the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District’s Board of Trustees and Tom Reynolds was re-appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Both appointments are for two years expiring Dec. 31, 2027.
A public hearing has been set for Feb. 3 at 6:30 pm regarding a zoning change requested by Michelle Construction for property at 4713 King Rd. from R-1 to R-2 with a PD Overlay.
Following Sylvania City Council President Mark Frye’s tribute to retiring Mayor Craig Stough, city council ended his final meeting with a round of applause.
