City beat …

The Honorable Michael Bonfiglio administered the oath of office to Sylvania Mayor Mark Frye during the Jan. 7 City Council meeting. The swearing-in ceremony was followed by an official cry by Sylvania Town Crier Mike Lieber.

Mary Westphal was elected president of council at an earlier special meeting. She noted that the Employees & Community Relations Committee, which met before the regular council meeting, recommended the appointment of Mary Morrison to serve on the Board of Zoning Appeals for a term ending Dec. 31, 2027, which council approved. Westphal also set dates, with council approval, for the selection of a new member of council to fill the vacancy created by the former mayor’s resignation. Council has 30 days to fill the position.

Following a public hearing, City Council members voted to approve Builder Mike Hojnacki’s zoning ordinance planned development amendment for Centennial Crossings, changing two lots from commercial to residential use.
Council also authorized Finance Director Toby Schroyer to enter a three-year collective bargaining agreement with the city of Sylvania Municipal Employees Association for a four percent yearly raise and a one-year agreement for the same four-percent raise for other non-union workers.
After several months of negotiations, City Council approved a purchase agreement for three properties at 5710, 5716, and 5720 Summit St. for $200,000 from Quinnell Investments. The properties were purchased for future development.
Service Director Joe Shaw’s request to enter into a contract with ODOT to construct the US-23/Monroe Street interchange project was granted. His recommendations were for accepting proposals from DGL Consulting Engineers for $231,608 for professional engineering services for the Brint Road/Harroun Road roundabout project and from American Structurepoint Inc. for construction management services of $427,120 for Phase One of the Downtown Transportation Improvement and $120,436 for the Harroun Road and Ravine Drive Intersection Improvement project.
Council also approved Shaw’s request to advertise for bids on the Silvertown Drive Waterline Improvement and Resurfacing project.
The next Sylvania City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 pm.
