Policy Updates
At the Feb. 18 meeting of the Sylvania Township Board of Trustees, Township Administrator Oliver Turner’s request to update township policies was approved. Those updates include:
New Employee Probation Time
Newly hired employees or current employees who are promoted or transferred to another position will serve a one-year probationary period unless otherwise determined by an applicable collective bargaining agreement. This revised policy brings consistency to all township departments.
Tuition Reimbursement
Full-time employees will be reimbursed for qualifying tuition expenses, books, and academic fees at an accredited college or university only for courses that are directly related to the employee’s job duties or field or that are required as part of an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or certificate program directly related to the employee’s job duties or field. Online learning courses are eligible.
A completed tuition reimbursement form must be submitted to the employee’s department head for approval before the beginning of the course. Upon approval, the employee must obtain a passing grade of “B” or above to be eligible for 100 percent reimbursement, or a passing grade of “C” for 50 percent reimbursement.
An employee leaving township employment within two years of completing a course shall be obligated to repay the township in full for any such reimbursed tuition expenses unless the employee is granted a disability retirement within that time.
Road Project
Road Superintendent Rob Nash was authorized to advertise for bids for Phase Two of the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) Improvement project for Corey Road.
According to Nash, Phase II of the 2024 OPWC project includes widening, pavement repairs, resurfacing, striping, and tying down the edge of pavement with existing driveways and yards. The project was postponed because utilities were not relocated in time.
