This catalog home was built in 1909 and owned by John and Rose Grout. Records show that a detached garage was also constructed in 1909. The Grouts were listed living in Whiteford Township, Mich. as of the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records. Sylvania Then & Now – 5800 Summit Street

This house was built in 1902 while owned by Henry Hubbard. Henry married Harriet Harroun-VanOrman in 1865, after her first husband, John VanOrman, was killed serving during the Civil War. Harriet had one child from the first marriage, Viola Clarabelle VanOrman, born 1858 and died 1930. With Henry Hubbard she had two children: Frederick Hubbard – born 1868 – died 1891; and Levi Collins Hubbard – born 1874 – died 1953. In the 1920 census Comstock was living on Monroe Street in one of the old Comstock homes, and he was renting this home on Summit Street to Arza and Mildred Smalley and their children: Mabel, Charles and Franklin. Sylvania – Then and Now – 5736 Summit Street

The parcel where this house sits was originally supposed to be part of the route for the first railroad tracks through Sylvania. At that time Main Street was called Division Street because it divided David White’s town from William Wilson’s town. White had drawn his map for the Town of Whiteford in 1835. His town was to be established on properties east of Main Street, and his map showed the proposed railroad tracks running through his town.
